Korean fir

Abies koreana

The Korean fir has glossy green needle clusters and forms an elegant symmetrical shape making it a popular choice in the garden and as a Christmas tree.

The cones are cylindrical, tapering slightly toward the tip and displaying a lovely violet-purple seed.

The Korean fir ticks all the boxes for style and functionality.

Origin and climate

Korean firs originate at higher altitudes of the mountains in South Korea and Jeju Island. Climatic characteristics of these mountain ranges include winter snowfall events and cool humid summers.

Growth

Height: 2 meters over 8 to 10 years

Ideal Growth Conditions: Loamy, well-drained soil with a pH range between 6 and 8. Grows in full sun or partial shade. More tolerant to heat compared to other conifers.

Attributes: Elegant pyramidal structure requiring little to no effort to maintain a nice shape. Fine grey and green needles with upright cylindrical cones are aesthetically popular given their Violet colour.

Tending and care

It may be a slow-growing variety however the Korean Fir is worth it! A versatile low-care choice for gardeners and Bonsai hobbyists alike. This tree will happily grow in areas with soils as described above or in a pot, is frost hardy and wind tolerant.
